Omega-3: essential fatty acids for your body and your brain!

Écrit par Ecosystem Laboratoire - Publié le

Omega-3s are essential fatty acids that our body and brain need to function properly. Of the 3 types of omega-3, DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) are the two that will be of particular interest in this article. We will explore the benefits of these two fatty acids and explain why it is crucial to include them in our diet.

Sources of DHA & EPA:

The human body cannot produce (or synthesize) DHA and EPA by itself, at least not without the help of the third type of omega-3, ALA (alpha-linolenic acid). However, even in this specific case where our body would transform ALA into DHA, the rate of conversion of the former into docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is too low for us to have enough of it in our body. It is therefore essential to obtain it through our diet. The richest sources of DHA and EPA are fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines and herring. Fish oil or seaweed oil supplements are also good options for those who have trouble getting enough fatty fish or who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet.

Omega-3 benefits for the body:

  • Cardiovascular health

Consumption of omega-3s, particularly DHA and EPA, has been associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. These fatty acids help reduce inflammation, lower blood triglycerides and prevent blood clots. They also help maintain a regular heartbeat, which can reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

  • Brain Health

DHA is especially important for brain development and function. It makes up about 40% of the polyunsaturated fatty acids in the brain and is essential for infant brain development and maintenance of cognitive health in adults. Consumption of DHA and EPA may also help prevent and alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety.

  • Joint health

Omega-3s, particularly EPA, have anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce the pain and inflammation associated with arthritis and other joint diseases. Regular consumption of EPA may also help improve mobility and quality of life for people with arthritis.

  • Eye Health

DHA

is an essential component of the eye's retina and plays a crucial role in vision. Adequate consumption of DHA can help prevent age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a major cause of blindness in the elderly.
