The benefits of OPC, natural antioxidants!

Écrit par Ecosystem Laboratoire - Publié le

OPCs, or oligo-proanthocyanidins, are flavonoid compounds found in many plants, including grape seeds, berries and pine bark. They are known for their antioxidant properties, i.e. their ability to protect cells from oxidative stress caused by free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that damage cell membranes, DNA and proteins, and are implicated in ageing and many chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and neurodegenerative disorders.

OPCs to keep you young:

OPCs are considered powerful antioxidants because they are able to neutralise free radicals in aqueous and lipid environments, unlike vitamins C and E, which are water-soluble and fat-soluble respectively. What's more, OPCs have a particular affinity with collagen, the main protein in connective tissue, which ensures the cohesion and elasticity of skin, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and blood vessels. OPCs bind to collagen and protect it from enzymatic degradation and glycation, a process that alters the structure and function of collagen by binding it to glucose. In this way, OPCs help to preserve the health and youthfulness of the skin and connective tissues.

The role of OPCs in cardiovascular health:

OPCs also have beneficial effects on cardiovascular health, as they improve blood circulation, reduce blood pressure, lower cholesterol levels and prevent the oxidation of LDL-cholesterol, which is a risk factor for atherosclerosis. OPCs also strengthen the walls of the blood capillaries and reduce oedema, i.e. swelling caused by an accumulation of fluid in the tissues. OPCs are therefore useful for relieving the symptoms of varicose veins, haemorrhoids, heavy legs or blows and injuries.

OPCs, anti-inflammatory properties:

OPCs also have anti-inflammatory properties, as they inhibit the production of certain substances that trigger inflammatory reactions, such as prostaglandins or leukotrienes. In this way, they can alleviate joint pain, allergies and asthma. OPCs also have an anti-infectious effect, preventing bacteria and viruses from adhering to host cells and stimulating the immune system. They are effective in preventing or treating urinary tract infections, tooth decay, colds and flu.

How should OPCs be consumed?

OPCs are present in many plant-based foods, such as red fruit, grapes, apples, nuts, green tea, cocoa and red wine. However, the OPC content of these foods varies according to variety, growing conditions, degree of ripeness, processing and preservation methods. What's more, OPCs are often concentrated in the inedible parts of plants, such as seeds, peels or skins. It is therefore difficult to obtain a sufficient intake of OPCs from food alone.

Are there OPC-based products?

There are food supplements based on extracts of grape seeds, pine bark or berries, which contain standardised and guaranteed doses of OPC. These supplements are generally well tolerated and have no side effects, as long as the recommended doses and any contraindications are respected. It is advisable to take OPCs in the morning, on an empty stomach or between meals, to promote their absorption. It is also advisable to combine them with vitamin C, which potentiates their antioxidant action and promotes collagen synthesis.

In conclusion:

OPCs are natural antioxidants with numerous health benefits. They protect cells from ageing, strengthen skin and connective tissue, improve blood circulation, reduce inflammation and prevent infection. To benefit from these virtues, it is advisable to eat OPC-rich foods on a regular basis, and to supplement your diet with grape seed, pine bark or berry extracts. Several Ecosystem Laboratoire products contain OPCs: our concentrated coffees in the "Moga" range, and our Mac Oc Premium.
